I am searching for information on William Lawrence, born on August 1 1807 in Winchester, Cheshire Co, NH. On March 6 1833, he married in Winchester, NH to Elizabeth L. Tufts (1812-1858), daughter of George Tufts and Martha Linkfield. He died on June 8, 1897.

William Lawrence has twelve children, including my gr-gr-grandfather, Charles B. Lawrence, born on December 28, 1841 in Winchester, NH. A complete list of the family can be found on a large family plaque in the Warwick Cemetery, Warwick, MA.

In particular, I am interested in tracking down the parents of William Lawrence -- so far I have had no success. I have a sneaking suspicion that his father may be Nathaniel Lawrence (born 1781, died 1837, son of Nathaniel Lawrence and Mary/Mollie Buttrick/Butterick), but I have no proof one way or the other. If anyone has any information on the Lawrence family in Cheshire Co, NH, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Chuck Mason 11/12/01
Reverend John LAWRENCE (father of Ann LAWRENCE m. Robert PECK, had Ann PECK who m. Major John MASON, circa 1600 to 1687, general of the armies of CT and Deputy Gov. of that Colony.) sold his estate at St. James Parke, South Elmham, Suffolk, England, U.K. to an Alderman MASSAM, according to records in the Tanner Library at Oxford.

Since no-one has ever been able to find out anything concerning Major John MASON'S lineage in England, even though Lord FAIRFAX, during the Round Heads/Cavaliers war wrote to the Major asking him to return to England and take a Generalship under his command, I'm wondering if this Alderman MASSAM might not, in fact, be rather, MASON. How would one best go about finding out if that is the case?

P.S. My info on the Lawrence family comes from a write up in the "American Genealogist by Schuyler Lawrence of Wysox, Penn. Entitled "The Maternal Ancestry of Anne Peck, Second Wife of Captain John Mason" (c. 1600 - 1672)

George Lawrence/Laurence, served in Butler's Rangers, and was at fort Niagara in 1783. He was a United Empire Loyalist (UE). He died in 1848. His children, (approved to receive land at UEs), were, as follows: William (1806), John (1811), Peter (1817), Elizabeth (1817), George (1817), Benjamin (1822), and James (1829). Land was usually granted on the persons 21st birthday.

There is a John Lawrence, Niagara. His son, Francis received land in 1817.

George Laurence resided in the Home District of Upper CANADA. He was a soldier in Butler's Rangers, C.B.N. (is not explained), 1794, with a wife and one child, being considered for Provisional Lands at Niagara in 1784, 100, and Provisional Lands at Kingston. He was from Vermont, but originally from Limerick, Ireland. The original, pre-Anglicized, spelling of the name as "LaUrence" suggests he might have been from a family of French Huguenots. The Vermont connection was mentioned by my father in connection to a ? x great grandfather, who migrated to Upper CANADA at the time of the American Revolution.

Further, William Lawrence (1781-1864) buried at Bookton Cemetery, Windham Township, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada, may be the father of William Francis Lawrence; and he may be the son of George Lawrence. William Francis Lawrence is my great grandfather.

If this makes a connection to anyone in your lineage, or if you have any ideas about this research, then please contact me.

My LAWRENCE research is taking me to Londonderry, Windham Co, VT.There were quite a few LAWRENCE families in townships adjoining Londonderry, but in the census records index, I only found one name in Londonderry: Stephen LAWRENCE, in 1820 and 1830, and he may have been born between 1780 and 1790. The census records hint that Stephen had at least five sons. I'm hoping that one of them was William R. LAWRENCE, whose wife's first name was Olive, and they ended up in St. Lawrence County, NY. Has anyone researched the LAWRENCES in the southern counties of Vermont?

Looking for any information on my great grandfather, William G. Lawrence, born 1860 died 1924. According to my grandfather, he was an orphan from Hamlin, PA (Wayne County). He was possibly adopted by relatives. I have not been able to find any information about him in any records, but I do have a set of diaries that confirms that he was in Wayne County from 1883 on. According to the diaries, he was spending a lot of time with a Nettie Walker for the whole year of 1884, but there is nothing about a marriage, and in all of the diaries after that (the next one starts in 1908) his wife is just referred to as "Mrs. Lawrence" or "Mrs. WGL". My father has no idea what his grandmother's name was, says that my grandfather never mentioned it. William's children that I have been able to find are:
George Lawrence-- Born Nov. 17 1889 Died Jan. 1973 in Kingston NY
Lloyd C. Lawrence-- Born 1895 Died May 22, 1971 in Winsted CT
Jule Lawrence
Helen Lawrence (Possibly married a Brigunzi or Bergunzy, but I haven't been able to find this)
Harvey Lawrence-- Born Oct. 17, 1906 Died Feb. 28, 1988 in Glastonbury, CT (My grandfather)
This has been a mystery for a long time in our family, so any clues at all will be massively helpful!

I am searching for information on Lawson Edward Lawrence.  He married Louisa Koenig in Louisville, KY on Sept. 21, 1886.  The only confirmed information I have is their marriage certificate and the 1900 census (he died in 1901).  According to the 1900 census, he was born in Scotland around 1826 and emigrated to America in 1830.  But searches of prior U.S. censuses have failed to located him.  Given his age at marriage (60 years old) to Louisa, there is a good likelihood that he was married before.  There is also a good likelihood that he emigrated much later than 1830. If anyone has any information that may be even remotely related to Lawson Lawrence, I would appreciate hearing from you.

I am seeking information on my great grandfather William LAWRENCE. He would have been born in the early 1850s, probably in or near London. He married Sarah Jane PORTER, who was born in Staines, Middlesex (now Surrey) in 1856. They lived in Staines, where he worked as a butcher. They had three children: William (b 1878), Annie (b 1880) and Ethel (b1883). I believe he died before 1891, as Sarah is described as a widow in the census of that year. I have been unable to find any BMD or census information on him and would be grateful for any suggestions.

My wife is descended from Louisa Lawrence, born ca 1810, possibly in Chichester, Sussex. (she was very variable in her place of birth and age in the various censuses eg Brighton and Hampshire were other places she gave) said to have been of full age and a spinster when she married Charles Twiss (bachelor)in February 1832 in Holy Trinity parish Church, Cambridge. (Witnesses James Moore and M Prime) She was living in St Edwards Parish. His occupation grocer's assistant at birth of daughter Louisa Twiss in 1833.

In 1845 her husband Charles died of a combination of asthma and tuberculosis. She remarried as Louisa Twiss at the Registry Office in Stepney, on 30th June 1849, Robert Leon Isaacson, commercial traveller aged 36 years, bachelor. His father given as Joseph Isaacson, Gentleman. She was a widow aged 35 years. Her father is given as James Lawrence, Colonel 13th Light Dragoons. Witnesses were Matilda Lawrence and John Dobson.

In the description of the 13th dragoons at the Battle of Waterloo there is mention of an adjutant who arrived late in Belgium with the regiment, James Lawrence, possibly the same as the above.

Louisa Isaacson died in Middlesex in 1898 at which time she was lodging on the Great North Road, Hackney on her own means.

Any information about this Lawrence family would be very gratefully received.

My daunting task is to find more about the Lawrence family of Little Munden, Herts. My great-great-grandfather married Mary Ann Lawrence by Archbishop's special licence on 3 January 1837. According to IGI she had been baptised on 8 May 1809 at Great Munden and she died at Kingston Surrey on 27 December 1887. Her parents were George and Charlotte.Again according to IGI, siblings were Elizabeth (1811), Sarah (1813), John (1815, Hannah (1817), Charlotte (1823), Caroline (1825). Any info appreciated. Unfortunately a Miss Lawrence of the village died only a year or two ago, so any info appreciated!

Blessings.

P.S. My info on the Lawrence family comes from a write up in the "American Genealogist by Schuyler Lawrence of Wysox, Penn. Entitled "The Maternal Ancestry of Anne Peck, Second Wife of Captain John Mason" (c. 1600 - 1672)

I am eager to find the descendants of Alexander Lawrence of Portsoy, Fordyce, Banffshire, born 19 April 1842, son of John Lawrence and Elspet Sutherland. He married Ann Murdoch of King-Edward, Aberdeenshire on 5 June 1869. I am especially interested to find the descendants, if any, of Alexander, the son of Alexander and Ann, born 6 August 1871 in Scatterty, King-Edward. He enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders in 1891 and served with that regiment for nearly a quarter of a century. He died on the Somme, 19 September 1916, temporary captain and adjutant, 10th Battalion, the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment and is buried at Mericourt-L'Abbe, France. His wife was Janet (Jeannie) McLaughlan (McLaughlin?) and they had a residence at Park House, Broxburn, West Lothian.

I am looking for family info on Sir Thomas Lawrence. Supposedly related through my Nicholson or Thompson lines in England according to family history. Was said to have been engaged to cousin Elizabeth Nicholson Thompson b.1788 in Felton Northumberland England. Any info appreciated. His bio:

LAWRENCE, SIR THOMAS 1769-1830
Born in Bristol, Lawrence spent his childhood in Devizes, Oxford, Weymouth, and Bath. His remarkable artistic talent was recognized when he was only ten. In 1787 he moved to London and entered the Royal Academy Schools, where he received great encouragement from Sir Joshua Reynolds. Upon Reynolds death Lawrence was appointed Painter to the King, George III, and in 1820 he became President of the Royal Academy. Lawrence was also patronized by the King's son, the Prince Regent the future King George IV who commissioned an important series of portraits of sovereigns, statesmen, and generals that hangs in the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle. From 1790 to 1830, Lawrence received a steady stream of commissions, and his portraits earned him a reputation on the Continent unequaled by any earlier British painter.
